In May 2021, I finally took the first step toward the orthodontic treatment I had long wished for. It was the era in Japan when everyone wore masks as a matter of course due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I felt it was the perfect time to start braces without worrying about being seen.
I had been envisioning orthodontics “someday” since my early twenties. The trigger came from a friend who worked as a dental assistant, who spoke about the “power of a beautiful smile.” Looking back now, I realize those words kept nudging me forward.
I never wavered on the method. After years of research and listening to those who had undergone orthodontics, my choice was clear: authentic metal brackets. Through a combination of a friend’s recommendation and my research, I ultimately found a trusted orthodontic specialist clinic—the only one in my hometown I felt confident about.
The consultation with a certified orthodontist was incredibly sincere; when they said, “Don’t decide right away, take it home and think it over,” it strengthened my resolve. *1
September 2016. I clipped a video showing my original tooth alignment, but more than my teeth, I was struck by my youth.
Before the actual treatment, I went through X-rays, dental impressions, and rubber spacers to secure space, and by June, braces were fitted on my upper teeth. The next major step was tooth extraction. Referred to a large hospital because the clinic couldn’t perform the procedure, I was about to have an experience beyond my imagination.
June 1, 2021. Braces were first attached to my upper teeth.
Four wisdom teeth, four additional teeth to secure space, and one extra tooth revealed for the first time by X-ray—a total of nine extractions. This was the greatest trial in my orthodontic journey. Even with the so-called “god hands” of a renowned dentist, the pain after the anesthesia wore off was unimaginable. I struggled with bleeding and swelling, required three visits, and eventually had to be hospitalized for the removal of the extra tooth. This was also the first time I underwent general anesthesia in my life.
Looking back, I can say without hesitation that this grueling process was “the hardest moment in my orthodontic life.” Yet, it is also true that overcoming it gave me confidence in myself. *2
Next time, I’ll share the full details of the treatment costs and daily life with braces. Orthodontics is not merely “dental treatment”; it is a long journey of self-improvement. From the day I took that first step, my life began to change quietly but steadily.
August 2021. If you look closely, my face is swollen from the extractions.
*1 Orthodontic treatment is generally not covered by insurance. If you are considering it, I strongly recommend researching thoroughly over time. While I have no regrets, for me it was a major investment, after studying abroad and owning a car.
*2 The number and necessity of extractions vary depending on the case. Consult thoroughly with your doctor to determine the best plan for you.
